This project aimed to develop methodologies and guidance for measurement and management of the water footprint (WF) associated with the production and supply of red meat products. The first stage of this project resulted in a review of water footprinting methods relevant for the NZ red meat sector (Zonderland-Thomassen et al., 2011). This second stage of the project assessed the water footprint of beef and sheep meat following the life cycle from the cradle-to-meat-processing-gate for a range of NZ sheep meat and beef suppliers including the range in farm system types and meat processing plants across the key regions of NZ.
