At Massey University we offer three 15-credit papers in Life Cycle Assessment and Life Cycle Management at postgraduate level. Papers are delivered in distance-learning mode to enable flexibility for people in the workforce so that they can study in a style that fits in with other demands in their lives. Students may also be required attend a short course (two days) as part of each paper, usually around mid-semester.
The papers contribute towards postgraduate qualifications, including the Postgraduate Diplomas and Master’s degrees in AgriScience and Environmental Management with endorsements in Life Cycle Management.
This paper introduces life cycle thinking and related concepts in environmental management, and LCA methodology according to the ISO 14040 series of LCA standards. Participants undertake an LCA case study using an LCA software program, and evaluate the role of LCA and related footprinting studies in contributing to development of more sustainable value chains.
Case studies are used to examine philosophical, methodological and empirical issues in LCA and footprinting including: consequential and attributional LCA to support decision-making, relevance and implications of allocation and system expansion, inventory data quality, impact assessment methods, and standardisation of approaches.
This paper gives participants the opportunity to examine quantitative methods and methodological issues in Life Cycle Assessment and Footprinting through reviews of existing LCA studies, and undertaking - and reflecting on - their own LCA study.
