FIRST CALL FOR THE IXth INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON:

Life Cycle Assessment in the Agri-Food Sector Towards

Sustainable Food Systems

The American Center for Life Cycle Assessment, ACLCA, is pleased to host the Ninth International Life Cycle Assessment of Foods Conference in San Francisco, California in 6-10 October 2014.  This dynamic event – globally known as the LCA Foods 2014 – unites the scientific community with food industry professionals, researches, academics and policy makers.  This will be the first time the conference is being held outside of Europe and it is an opportunity to showcase and enhance the sustainability of US Food systems. 
This conference will be held back-to-back with the LCA XIV Conference

Vision

The Vision of the LCA of Foods Conference is to combine the scientific academic approach of the conference with an LCA-based sustainable food fair that brings together food and food packaging producers, researchers and retailers. Exhibitors are encouraged to have LCAs in hand to make their point that sustainability is measurable and therefore doable, thus providing consumers choices, which CAN drive the sustainability of our food systems.

Food Expo (9 October 2014)

The food expo will begin in the afternoon/evening on October 9. Participation by celebrity chefs, including Iron Chef Simon, is planned for a center stage kitchen. Cooking demonstrations will focus on menus and dishes that showcase sustainable food choices and ingredients. The goal is to show that real sustainability needs to be reflected through the entire value chain, and life cycle thinking can affect consumer’s decision making process while selecting food products.

Anticipated Objectives of the Conference

  • Show the recent developments in the methodology, approaches, databases and tools relevant to LCA.
  • Present applications of the LCA methodology to food product systems and to food consumption patterns.
  • Increase the use of LCA and other ecological tools in food and agricultural products.
  • Support information sharing and exchange of experience regarding environmental decision-making in the food and agriculture supply chain and agriculture policy community.
  • Provide background for the sustainability of the food and agriculture sectors.

Anticipated Outcomes of the Conference

  • A special issue of the International Journal of LCA will made of select papers from the conference;
  • Movement towards measuring sustainability in food systems using LCA;
  • Strong economic benefit for food providers using ecolabels based on LCA (environmental product declarations);
  • Better understanding of factors controlling the impacts of agricultural practices;
  • Identification of the research needs to link the life cycle impact indicators to environmental condition changes;
  • Integration of nutrition and life cycle assessment;
  • Increased awareness and understanding of the relationship between climate change and hunger. 

Topics to be Covered

  • Specific aspects of the food and agriculture Industry – treatment in LCA (LCA of artificial and natural food ingredients, food production, processing and waste treatment;
  • Food and agriculture system analysis and LCIA modeling (specific impact categories of the primary agriculture sector such as land use, water use, biodiversity etc.);
  • Application and convergence of non-LCA modeling and databases and Life Cycle inventory and impact modeling, e.g. pesticides dispersion models and groundwater sampling results;
  • The effects of food packaging systems and food waste on product life cycles, especially in the restaurant sector;
  • Alternative food production technologies LCAs (such as GMOs, organic, and permaculture approaches);
  • Interaction of climate change on food security and the life cycle impact of famine relief and climate adaptation strategies in global and local food systems;
  • Food policy – related LCAs (LCA applied to diets or lifestyles e.g. American diet, low-income diets); connecting LCA and government sponsored healthy – eating recommendations e.g. balanced – diet mixes; vegetarian and vegan diets; IO – LCAs in the food industry; 
  • LCA and sustainable food systems (Eco-Labeling and communication (incl. footprinting); Economic and Societal assessment in LCA; LCA and food policy/corporate strategy; case studies).

All accepted abstracts will provide a 4 to 10 page paper for the conference proceedings. Selected papers will be published in a special issue of the International Journal of LCA.
